Smiles of delight

Youngsters from local Schools have been learning about the importance of oral hygiene thanks to Ashby dental.

Key Stage 1 children were treated to a special session by members of Ashby Dental, based in Wetherby, as part of their activities for National Smile Week. As well as learning how to take care of their teeth and gums properly, they enjoyed guessing how much sugar was in their favourite drinks - and were surprised by some of the results.

"There are regular stories in the media about how children as young as five are having multiple fillings," explained Dr Richard Moon, of Ashby Dental.

"It's important to remember that just about everything we eat or drink contains sugar in some shape or form, so it's vital to brush properly afterwards to stop it damaging young teeth. If you know that a can of cola contains the equivalent of ten lumps of sugar, you can imagine the effect it can have on teeth over time. It's far better to choose milk or water, and keep the fizzy drinks as a treat."

The children also received special National Smile Week goody bags with toothbrushes, balloons and smiley-face masks - as well as a reminder about just how many sugar lumps could be found in that can of fizzy pop!

Emma Miller, headteacher of Kirk Hammerton & Staveley School, said: "Teaching our pupils to look after themselves and encouraging them to be healthy is as important to us as the more traditional school subjects. Their teeth should last them a lifetime so National Smile Week is a great project to be part of. We're delighted Ashby Dental chose to visit us - the children learned a lot and were especially thrilled with their 'Smiley' masks!"

Ashby Dental recognised for superb patient care

It's smiles all round for a Wetherby dental practice which has been honoured for its high levels of customer care and clinical standards.

Ashby Dental, based on Deighton Road, has been awarded prestigious Denplan Excel accreditation after undergoing a rigorous assessment programme. Developed by the UK's largest dental payment plan specialist, Denplan, it is the first such programme to be approved by the Patients' Association, the national organisation that campaigns for better patient care.

Dr Jack Cook, a partner and principal dentist at Ashby Dental alongside Dr Richard Moon, said the team was delighted to have been awarded the accreditation.

"This is a real achievement for everyone at Ashby Dental and underlines our commitment to providing the highest possible standards of patient care and service. We strive to offer a pleasant, relaxing environment as well as superb care with extras such as free wifi in the waiting room and comfortable chairs - it's not your average trip to the dentist!

"Achieving Denplan Excel status was very much a team effort so it's great that everyone's hard work has been rewarded."

The accreditation means patients can be assured they will receive clear information about their treatment at all times and are fully involved in all decisions relating to the care of their teeth and gums. The status is reviewed every 18 months.

We have two new staff members joining the practice to further enhance our patient experience.

Iwona Dorow will be joining Anna & Dale on the front desk and Angela Fishwick, who has nursed at the practice in the past, is rejoining to fulfil the new position of Treatment Co-ordinator. Her role will be to look after all new patients in addition to co-ordinating the more complex treatments of existing patients. Jack & Richard feel that the addition of Iwona and Angela will strengthen the team, in order that Ashby may continue to maintain the highest standards of dental care and patient experience.

Happy 5th Birthday Ashby!

To celebrate our 5th birthday in style, a full practice refurbishment has just been completed and it really does look beautiful.

Jack & Richard are really proud of how the practice has evolved over this period, owing much to the hard work and dedication of every member of the staff team.

The work includes not only redecoration of the building but also re-branding to introduce a whole new look to the practice.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Jack Cooke Snr

I'm often asked how my father is- so here it is in a nutshell. Basically he's playing a lot of golf! This year he is the Captain of Moortown GC and with that accolade comes a lot of commitment to matches, social events and visits to other Clubs. Needless to say he's enjoying himself enormously.

Congratulations to Jack

Jack  Cooke completed the Coast to Coast (St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay) on his mountain bike at the end of April. He and his fellow bikers covered 197 miles in 23.5 hours. 85% of the route was off road, mainly following Wainwrights famous pathway across the country.
